Plasticizer 154 harmful effects

It is widely appreciated that the deterioration of metal and plastic implant materials within the body is one of the most important aspects of implant surgery. This particular application of materials places an almost unique demand on the resistance to deterioration. The reasons are basically twofold, for not only may the environmental effects alter the structure and properties of the material, which may itself affect the function of the implant and hence the well-being of the patient, but also the by-products of any structural change may have harmful effects on the patient... [Pg.470]

Now, the UVB radiation is likely to have harmful effects on the health of human beings causing melanomas, cataracts, erythemas, by decreasing the effectiveness of the immune system and causing genetic mutations it also affects animals and plants and is a cause of the ageing of plastics, paints and varnishes. [Pg.28]

The teacher uses plastic bags, polystyrene boxes and plastic food wares as example of polymers and explaining the monomers that form these polymers, the chemical process involved and the benefits and harmful effects of these polymers to human health and the environment. [Pg.253]

A summary is presented of topics discussed at a conference on adhesive tapes organised in Athens by AFERA. These included the use of iodopropynyl butyl carbamate for the protection of water-based adhesives from biological attack, the formulation of NR latex based adhesives with tackifiers in aqueous dispersion, the effects of silicon contamination on adhesion to plastics film supports treated in different ways, possible harmful effects... [Pg.99]

Chemicals used to protect plastics against the harmful effects of UV light. [Pg.479]

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make polycarbonate, a clear plastic that is used to manufacture beverage bottles, including baby bottles. Washing polycarbonate bottles with certain detergents or at high temperatures disrupts the polymer, causing small amounts of BPA to leach from the bottles. Because BPA is an estrogen mimic, there are concerns about the harmful effects from low levels of BPA. In 2008, Canada banned the use of... [Pg.610]

The rapid movement in the global phthalates market away from using plasticisers 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in favour of alternative products was underscored recently when BASF revealed plans to close its 2-EH and DEHP plants in Germany. The restructuring in Europe will have no effect on BASF s plasticiser portfolio in Nafta and Asia, however, where the company will continue to offer 2-EH and DEHP. About 70% of the plasticiser maiket volume is phthalates, and plasticisers make up about 60% of the plastic additives maiket. PVC accounts for 80-90% of global plasticiser consumption. In October 2003, California added DEHP to the state s list of more than 750 chemicals known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm. Previous studies had shown that the chemical can leach from plastic bags that contain intravenous fluids, blood, tube feedings or other medical treatment, and thereby enter the bodies of patients. [Pg.27]

Although environmentally persistent, most of the common phthalates have low toxicity ratings of 2 or 3, based on acute toxic effects. There is particular concern with regard to di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate used as a plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride plastic medical devices.12 Dialysis patients and hemophiliacs who receive frequent blood transfusions are especially likely to receive potentially harmful levels of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalates from contact of fluids with such devices. [Pg.321]
