Applications that are relevant to the topic of adhesion include the determination of the growth kinetics and densification of polymer films at surfaces, quahty control of anodization and other surface-modification pre-treatments, measurement of adsorption and determination of molecular orientation and compaction of adsorbed layers and Lang-muir-Blodgett films, detection of surface damage in plasma-etching processes and measurements of thinning of lubricant films. Metallization from the solution or vapour phase can be studied up to the stage at which the metal becomes opaque (around 40-nm thick for most metals). 

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is one of the solid consolidation processes which is carried out in a graphite mold and the heating is accomplished by spark discharges in voids between particles [10]. Whether a plasma is generated has not yet been confirmed, especially when non-conducting ceramic powders are compacted. However it has been experimentally verified that the densification is enhanced by the use of DC pulses [11]. Various materials have been compacted by SPS technique. Zhao et al. fabricated dense 50 nm BaTiOs ceramics (97% relative density) by SPS [12]. Very recently, Buscaglia et al. demonstrate that the 30 nm BaTiOs ceramics system is still... 

Significantly enhanced densification has been reported in plasma sintering for a variety of ceramics but the mechanisms are not clear. In microwave-induced plasma sintering of AI2O3, Su and Johnson (57) found significantly enhanced densification rates when compared to conventional sintering under the same time-temperature schedule. These results indicate that, besides the rapid heating rate achievable in a plasma, an athermal effect caused by the plasma itself also...
