Superior to DSA, MRI can depict arterial flow or lumen as well as the vessel walls. Analysis of plaque morphology was improved in recent years by the development of specific MRI techniques. Plaques can now be characterized in vivo with regard to fibroid or lipid content or hemorrhagic lesions (Fig. 5.8). It can be expected that, in the future, plaque examination will influence stroke treatment protocols if the risk of plaque rupture can be reliably estimated (Cappendijk et al. 2005 Hayes et al. 1996 Trivedi et al. 2004 Yuan et al. 2001). Plaque examinations, however, are not yet clinical routine. Source images of TOF-MRA allow only limited assessment of vascular walls. [Pg.87]

In AD neurons, there are three main types of neurofibrillary lesions (NFLs) according to their intracellular localization neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) inside the cell body and apical dendrites, and neuropil threads (NThs) in distal dendrites and dysrophic neurites, associated with senile plaques. Morphologically, three major subtypes of NFTs can be distinguished, corresponding to different evolutionary stages of these lesions. [Pg.652]

Once constructed, the plasmid sequences are introduced into the virus chromosome by co-transfection of the plasmid with naked wild type viral DNA. Recombination occurs at a low but useful frequency between these DNAs at their homologous regions, flanking the polyhedrin gene. The progeny virus from the co-transfection are plaqued, and the plaques are scored for type. Under a dissecting microscope, the recombinants can be selected from the wild types based on their distinctive plaque morphology due to a lack of PIBs. Once selected and a stock prepared, one has a virus which on infection of cells will direct the production of both additional virus and the product of the... [Pg.396]
