The ACS function is known only in higher plants. The activity of ACS isozymes is a key regulatory factor of ethylene biosynthesis pathway. In general, microorganisms liberate ethylene but their ethylene synthesis pathways do not involve ACC as an intermediate. Penicillium citrinum is the first reported microorganism that is able to synthesize ACC from SAM and to degrade it into ammonia and a-ketobutyrate, not to ethylene. ACS from P. citrinum shows a 100-fold higher for SAM than its plant counterparts. ...

These natural substances are of great interest due to both their unusual structures and the potent wide-ranging spectrum of biological activities that they possess antitumor activity [10] in vitro and/or in vivo, antiinflammatory activity [7], fungicidal activity [11], herbivorous mammalian antifeedant activity [12], insecticide activity against house-fly larvae and other insects [13] and, lastly, a potent plant growth regulatory activity, both as inhibitors and as stimulants [14-15].

The point arose as to the actual site of action of moniliformin in plants. Earlier, it had been stated that the geometrical criteria of hydrogen bond formation suggested that MH could be regarded as either a purine or pyrimidine analogue and, therefore, could substitute as one of the base pairs in nucleic acid.11 And the fact that it had shown plant growth regulatory activity had led an industrial company to become interested in the product as a potential herbicide.

This plant growth regulatory activity is due to inhibition of the biosynthesis of gibberellins (j>), at the three oxidation steps between ent-kaurene and ent-kaurenoic acid (Figure 2).
