Placement screening

Pressure sensitive adhesives can be coated on a substrate such as a polyester or paper backing to make a tape or label, or on a release liner to make a transfer adhesive, or a special substrate to make a graphic film or retro-reflective sheeting product. In some cases, where precision placement of the PSA is required, one may also coat directly on the substrate using techniques such as screen-printing. 

The investigation into the sabotage of Pan Am Flight 103, which left 269 dead, indicated that the explosive used was Semtex H, a plasticized mixture of hexahydro-l,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine and pentaerythritol tetranitrate, and that the amount used was half the quantity that the fledgling technique of Thermal Neutron Analysis (TNA) was designed to detect. Although the placement of the explosive device was fortuitous (from the terrorists point of view) and the suitcase had not been screened by TNA, this event killed the TNA prototype program. 

Normally, programs for virtual screening, for example, docking software, do not take multiple hydrogen placements of these three types into account. There are, however, a few partial solutions. The docking program FlexX [11] can generate stereoisomers on...

The screening software SPECITOPE, developed by Schnecke et al.156, uses distance matrix comparisons as a first filter step. Elowever, flexibility of molecules is not modeled by distance intervals. Instead, a weighting scheme is defined to scale down the contributions of more flexible atom pairs in the overall score. In addition, a special optimizer is added that allows the removal of protein-ligand steric clashes after the placement calculation. 

If both substrates to be bonded are nonconducting, then the adhesive formulation must contain a susceptor material. Susceptors can have a small percentage of magnetic iron oxide, iron filings, or carbon additives. A susceptor can also be a steel screen or perforated steel foil that is embedded in the adhesive bond line. It has been found that graphite fiber composites used in the automotive and aerospace industries are sufficiently conductive that they can be successfully heated with induction. Design considerations must be taken into account in placement of the graphite reinforcement, so that the material heats uniformly. 

In structure-based pharmacophore modeling, excluded volume spheres can be placed at atoms forming the binding site, a feature that has also been included in LigandScout. For faster screening and less restrictive models, LigandScout alternatively allows for the placement of only a few excluded volume spheres at the lipophilic side-chain residues that are in contact with hydrophobic features in the ligand.
