Piping design The plot plan is used to produce equipment arrangement studies that facilitate the interconnection of above- and below-ground process and utility piping systems and to estimate piping material quantities. 

The final step in the plot plan arrangement is to space equipment and supporting facilities for operator and maintenance access, safety, piping flexibility and support, and platforming requirements. The initial layout of any oily or storm water underground piping system usually takes place after the preliminary plot plan is generated. Even though some equipment locations may be tentative, the plant layout designer can begin to spot the oily water and storm water mains, locate sewer boxes, and establish the invert elevation of these systems at each end of the unit.
