Okunade and Wiemer reported isolation of a potent ant-repellent compound, (-)-loliolide (Fig. 7) from Xanthoxyllum setulosum. The plant is one of the many native Costa Rican plants found to escape attack of the highly polyphagous leafcutter ants Atta cephalotes. We were able to test the analog synergism in another setting where the analogs could be produced in sufficient quantity by synthesis. The wild pepper, Piper tuberculatum, was the most active of 16 pepper plants from Costa Rica assessed in our study (Bernard et al., 1995). Four insecticidal piperamides from P tuberculatum were produced by synthesis (Scott et al., 2002) and the lethal concentrations of the compounds were assessed alone and in binary, tertiary and quaternary mixtures. Although binary mixtures were no more toxic than individual compounds, toxicity increased with three and four compounds in the mixture, while keeping the total...

Im Moos (Sphagnum magellanicum) wurde fiber das Vorkommen von p-Hydroxy-(P-carboxy-methyl)-zimtsaure (Sphagnumsaure) (22), Schmp. 178—180° C, berichtet 285). Auch sei erwahnt, daB 4-Methoxy-zimtsaure und 3,4-Dimethoxyzimtsaure in einigen Pflanzen vorkommen. Papierchromatographische Hinweise auf 3,4-Methylendioxy-zimtsaure wurden in Piper tuberculatum gefunden 243).
