Once coal tar creosote is in the environment, both plants and animals can absorb parts of the creosote mixture. Some components of coal tar creosote have been found in plants exposed to creosote-treated wood in nearby soil. The plants absorb very little (less than 0.5% of the amount available to the plant). Animals such as voles, crickets, snails, pill bugs, and worms take up coal tar creosote components from the environment that are passed into the body through skin, lungs, or stomachs. Animals that live in the water, such as Crustacea, shellfish, and worms, also take up coal tar creosote compounds. For instance, mussels attached to creosote-treated pilings and... [Pg.19]

A layer of leaves at the base of the tree that, if left to decay, creates food and shelter for worms, slugs, snails, pill bugs, and millipedes, which in turn provides food for centipedes, spiders, and beetles. [Pg.142]

Make a pile of logs or sticks in a quiet spot to provide a wintering site for a community of animals from pill bugs, spiders, and hoverflies to toads, frogs, and salamanders. If you bury the logs at the bottom of the pile in the soil, many different beetle species may even take up residence in the decaying wood. [Pg.318]

Shellac, a resin, is the most representative material in the naturally occurring polyesters category. It is a mixture of monoesters and polyesters (secreted by female lac bug), with a backbone mainly consisting of aleuritic acid, terpenic acids, and minor fatty acids (Wang, 1999). This resin is used as a food additive and also as a pharmaceutical glaze. It also serves as coating material for tablets and capsules, particularly in time-released or delayed-action pills, because it stops the piU from breaking down in the stomach. [Pg.16]
