Radiation-Curable Polyester Coatings. Radiation-curable polyester paints (see also Section 3.7) are particularly suitable for coating flat surfaces (strips, boards, sheets) and for temperature-sensitive substrates (paper, plastics). Acrylate-modified polyester resins are used for UV printing inks, UV varnishes for paper and plastics, as well as for pigmentable, electron beam-curable gloss and matt paints [2.86]. Radiation-curable polyester paints are also suitable for metal coatings with good elasticity. 

A radiation curable ink can be cured by irradiation with UV light or by electron beams (8). When a radiation curable ink is used for printing on ink-iepeUent media, which absorb no or little ink, such as plastics, glass, and coated paper, the ink can be quickly dried. Basically, a radiation curable ink contains a polymerizable monomer, a pol5mierization initiator, a pigment and other additives.
