Spurred by the oil shocks of the 1970s, the US government has been supporting the development of photovoltaics ever since. As a result, the prices of photovoltaic modules have dropped from about 100 per watt in 1975 to around 4 per watt.16 During that time, the worldwide market for the technology has grown from just about zero to more than 90 megawatts— still tiny in comparison with the markets for wind and hydroelectric power. [Pg.90]

THE DOW CHEMICAL CO. recently announced plans to add capacity for its ENLIGHT polyolefin encapsulant films by building two new manufacturing plants in 2012. The new plants, located in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, and Schkopau, Germany, will reportedly more than triple the company s capacity for making specialty films used in photovoltaic modules, and will significantly expand the company s ability to supply encapsulant films worldwide.
