Models of chemical reactions of trace pollutants in groundwater must be based on experimental analysis of the kinetics of possible pollutant interactions with earth materials, much the same as smog chamber studies considered atmospheric photochemistry. Fundamental research could determine the surface chemistry of soil components and processes such as adsorption and desorption, pore diffusion, and biodegradation of contaminants. Hydrodynamic pollutant transport models should be upgraded to take into account chemical reactions at surfaces. [Pg.140]

Also, Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy provides relevant information regarding the specific interactions of different probes within substrates [17], especially in the diffuse-reflectance mode when applied to the study of powdered opaque surfaces that disperse the incident radiation. The extension of this technique to obtain time resolved transient absorption spectra in the IR wavelength range (laser flash-photolysis with IR detection) will certainly play in the near future an important role in terms of clarifying different reaction mechanisms in the surface photochemistry field [17c, 18]. [Pg.279]

Other applications of photochemistry include the development of sensitive fluorescent chemosensors for analysis of dilute solutions of inorganic cations and anions and the study of the diffusion of individual molecules in solution at room temperature. Fluorescent compoimds have been used as replacements for radioisotopes in the analysis of biological compoimds and the study of biologically active compounds and living systems. Photochemical reactions also offer alternative probes for the characterization of the microenvironments in diverse solid and liquid media, including crystals, zeolites, alumina, silica and clay surfaces, semiconductor surfaces, liquid crystals and host-guest inclusion complexes, polymer films, monolayers and supported multilayers of surfactant molecules, mi-celles, and dendrimers. ... [Pg.859]
