Photo-oxidation processes

Apparently, photo-oxidation processes are dominant during the initial period and lead to the formation of active centers contributing to further cross-linking of macrochains. It can be assumed that methylene groups adjacent to coordination-bound tin atoms are most susceptible to photo-oxidation. 

For the characterization of compounds extracted from plants, wool and dye baths, acquisition in the NI mode is used. The main signals in the mass spectra of each colourant are attributed to deprotonated molecular ions [M H]. More detailed studies can be performed by ESI MS" with a quadrupole ion trap mass analyzer, and such a set-up was used e.g. for the investigation of photo-oxidation processes of components of weld and onion skins.[29]... 

New compounds with unknown properties can be formed by oxidative treatment. Mutagenic and toxic properties have been found for reaction products of (photo)oxidation processes [59, 60, 76-78]. 

Figure 4.62 shows the Jablonski diagram of the oxygen molecule, restricted to the first few states relevant to photo-oxidation processes. The phosphorescence Sj-Tq is very weak and is difficult to detect because it comes in the NIR at 1270 nm. There are however two other emissions at 634 nm and 703 nm which are due to a biphotonic process... 

Cancer cells differ from normal cells in several ways, and these differences must be exploited in chemical treatments. In particular, it is found that certain chemicals concentrate in cancer cells in preference to normal cells, and phototherapy is based on a sensitized photo-oxidation process which destroys the essential components of the cell. 

Suspensions of hematite have also been used and studied for other aims than photooxidation of water, e.g. catalytic oxidation of sulphur dioxide in aqueous solutions [52]. Aqueous dispersion of semiconductor particles could be an easy and attractive way to photooxidise water, but they have the drawback that dihydrogen and dioxygen are produced simultaneously in the same suspension. Apart from the separation problem the two produced gases may create a pathway for back reactions that reduces the yield of the overall photo-oxidation process. The latter obstacle can partly be avoided by addition of Na2C03, which was successfully shown by Arakawa et al [115]. 

However, calculations predict85 that the exothermicity of formation (equation 77) of the nitrite adduct FC(0)0N0 is more than twice the activation energy for its dissociation into FNO and C02 (Figure 4) the measured rate of this reaction is fast, and the products are indeed as predicted84. No spectroscopic evidence has been found for FC(0)0N0 as an intermediate, and the experimental and theoretical studies both suggest that reaction 80 terminates the CFX3 photo-oxidation process. A summary of the oxidation steps of FC(0)0A radicals is shown in Figure 5.

Although it is evident from the above studies that the dithiocarbamate uv stabilisers function primarily as peroxide decomposers and only to a minor extent at uv absorbers, it is not clear to what extent they act as triplet quenchers. In the case of NlOx, it is known that this is not a hydroperoxide decomposer (37) and this is confirmed in Figure 11 which shows that it does not inhibit thermal oxidation to carbonyl and unlike NiDBC, its main effect in uv degradation is to retard the photo-oxidation process. This paper is an interpretation of the primary photo-oxidation process due to singlet oxygen and some problems in photostablll-zatlon of polymers and plastics. Electronic structure, generation, properties and role of singlet oxygen in polymer chemistry are discussed. The reader is also referred to a number of review articles on the subject (1-11). 

One of the typical catalysts of thermo- (and photo-) oxidative processes is titanium dioxide. Being introduced as a pigment into WPCs, it always accelerates both fading and oxidative degradation. 

The investigations of Bolland and Cooper and Wells, - discussed in Section IV, have been particularly valuable for indicating certain mechanisms for the photosensitized oxidation of cellulosic materials. The initial step is abstraction of a hydrogen atom by the excited dye, instead of any kind of electron-transfer process. Such a mechanism adequately explains the photo-oxidation which proceeds in the absence of moisture. When moisture is present, there is another process superimposed which also leads to photo-oxidation. Processes such as were described in relation to the sensitized photodecomposition of water (see Section III) may be intimately connected with the initiation step of the moisture-induced reaction. 

Although metals such as the alkaline earth group should not promote photo-oxidative processes via CTTM transitions, they have been implicated in the photodecomposition of pteridines in seawater (Landymore and Antia, 1978). This has been explained through a structural modification of... 

The full papers on the photo-oxidation process utilized in the transformation of spergulagenicacid into euptelogenin have been published (see Vol. l,p. 193). Application of this reaction to erythrodiol (145) afforded the lla,12a-epoxy-13)3,28-oxide (146) together with the rearranged lla,12a-epoxy-taraxerane (147). 

The surface-confined H2O2 can further react with OH ultimately to generate oxygen [170-173], Recent studies on rutile [174] and anatase [175] single-crystal photoelectrodes demonstrate that surface recombination mainly occurs via step (26).
