Phosphorus pentachloride solubility

The compound is produced by evaporating hydrochloric acid solutions of polonium (IV) 6, 26, 74), by heating the dioxide in carbon tetrachloride vapor 74), in hydrogen chloride, thionyl chloride or with phosphorus pentachloride 6) and by heating the metal in dry chlorine at 200°C (6, 25, 74). It is hygroscopic and hydrolyzes in moist air to a white solid, possibly a basic chloride (7)). Phosphorus pentachloride has a specific gravity of approximately 1.6 at room temperature, melts at 148°C. under pressure, and sublimes at 160°C. It is soluble in carbon disulfide and benzoyl chloride. [Pg.100]

Chlorine prepared from manganese dioxide and pure HC1 was liquefied and the dry gas evolved from the liquid was admitted to the dry phosphorus in a vacuum. In this ease phosphorus pentachloride was formed in considerable quantity and was removed only by several distillations. It could not be inferred with such confidence that the trichloride was free from pentachloride as that the tribromide was free from bromine. The trichloride was decomposed and oxidised in the manner already described. In the subsequent estimation of the silver chloride less difficulty was experienced in freeing this from occluded chloride, but more difficulty in determining accurately the amount of silver chloride remaining in solution. By chlorinating kynurenic acid with phosphorus pentachloride and oxychloride and by successive addition of quinoline to the reaction product, the authors obtained a colored substance, soluble in ethanol and giving a brilliant red-violet color with maximum absorption at 556-557 mp, of remarkable stability. [Pg.69]

The question of whether the phosphonitrilic chlorides have cyclic or linear structures has been frequently discussed in the literature. The structural evidence will be considered in Section lY, where it will be seen that the cyclic formulation is established beyond doubt for the trimer and tetramer, and is highly probable for the higher soluble polymers it will meanwhile be assumed for all compounds of formula (PNX2) . For reasons considered in Section II, C the petrol-insoluble fraction (PNCUln PCls is believed to consist of a mixture of linear polymers. The two series are related, in that the linear compounds of low molecular weight are intermediates in the formation of the cyclics by the ammonolysis of phosphorus pentachloride. [Pg.349]
