From antiquity up to now, many philosophers, scientists and economists have tackled with the sense and the meaning of the term quality , leading to numerous quality models, for example metaphysical, product management, economical, ecological and cognitive approaches. William B. Jensen begins the volume with an overview of scientific atomic theories from the 17 through 20 centuries. He mentions ancient atomism, but he begins in earnest analyzing corpuscular theories of matter proposed or entertained by natural philosophers in the 17 century. He describes the dominant flavors of atomic notions over fom centuries, from the mechanical through the dynamical, gravimetric, and kinetic, to the electrical. Jensen is Oesper Professor of Chemical Education and History of Chemistry at the University of Cincirmati and was the foimding editor of the Bulletin for the History of Chemistry.

Mechanics of Solids by J. R. Rice in Encyclopedia Britannica Vol. 23, pg. 734 (1993) is an outstanding overview of the entire realm of solid mechanics, giving coverage not only of the principles of continuum mechanics, but also their applications to deformation and fracture with interesting historical and philosophic commentary. 

Another mapping that could help to gain an overview on combinatorial chemistry is based on the philosophical approach, combinatorial synthesis dealing with the preparation of compound mixtures and parallel synthesis dealing with the synthesis of separate single compounds. 

R.A. Fisher s own views on inference are outlined in Fisher (1956) For a modern text covering frequentist approaches see Cox (2006) and for a mathematically elementary but otherwise profound outline of the Bayesian approach see Bindley (2006). Likelihood approaches are covered in Lindsey (1996), Royall (1999), Pawitan (2001) and the classic by Edwards (1992). Classic expositions of the fully subjective Bayesian view of probability are give by Savage (1954) and de Finetti (1974, 1975) and the case for its use in science is made by the philosophers Howson and Urbach (1993). A comparative overview of the various statistical systems is given by Barnett (1999). 

For this thirteenth international workshop on Qnantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics (QSCP-XIII), the second to take place ont of Europe, Prof Piotr Piecuch has asked me to present an illnstrated overview of the origins and development of these now established yearly meetings. The presentation will necessarily be linked to my own personal memories, and no donbt that another member of our committee might have put the stress on different aspects of the stoiy. However it may help the historians to see how processes in the scientific world may develop also along subjective lines. In order to make the presentation less tedious I have used a variety of pictures as well as historical or philosophical anecdotes or insights. 

In this section, I will focus on an example from the chemistry the theory of absolute chemical reaction rates. This theory is a typical chemical theory in the sense that it draws on many tmderlying theories to synthesise a new theory. Another motivation is that it can be argued that many of the current problems that plague current philosophers of chemistry - such as the problem of molecular structure and the problem of inconsistent use of quantum theoretical notions - were introduced to accommodate this theory. A brief overview and philosophical evaluation of the theory was given in Hettema (2012b), which I refer to for some of the details.

From its pre-philosophical beginnings as an aspect of the politics of the emergence of engineering as a profession, philosophical engineering ethics exhibits a trajectory that runs from discussions in two particular countries to discussions in many countries and suggestions of a need to move beyond ethics to pohtical philosophy. The movement could thus be summarized as one from politics to ethics to political philosophy. Our chapter overview of this trajectory has highhghted the following five theses ...
