When trimethylphenylhydrazine (1) is treated with nbutyllithium in the presence of tetramethyl-ethylenediamine, the orr/to-lithiated compound 2 is formed, which reacts with tetrachlorosilane or [2-(dimethylaminomethyl)phenyl]trichlorosilane to yield dichlorosilanes 3 and 4, respectively (Scheme 1). Both compoimds can be transformed into the corresponding silanes and diethoxysilanes.

A spectrophotometric procedure has been described184 based on the formation of a coloured complex with antimony pentachloride in carbon tetrachloride, for the determination of 0.01-1.0% biphenyl in phenyltrichlorosilane. These workers also described a spectrophotometric method for the determination of 0.01-10% biphenyl in phenyltrichlorosilane based on measurement of the difference in extinction of solutions of the sample and a standard in chloroform-ethanol at 251 nm. The determination of biphenyl in phenyltrichlorosilane and its hydrolysis products have also been discussed185 The extinctions of pure phenyl trichlorosilane and the sample are measured at 251 nm in chloroform ethanol 1 1 the difference is related to the content of biphenyl, which absorbs 60 times more strongly than phenyltrichlorosilane at that wavelength 0.05-10% of biphenyl may be determined. 

Kaneka has proposed flame retardants containing both silicon and boron, such as the reaction product of phenyl trichlorosilane and boric acid. Borealis has patented a polyolefin wire and cable composition containing metal hydroxides and a small quantity of an organosiloxane containing methyl, phenyl, vinyl or similar side-groups. 

Phenyl trichlorosilane, CeHsSiCU, reacts quantitatively with dry silica gels and the amount irreversibly reacted with the silanol surface permits estimation of surface area. There are 2.16 phenyl groups anchored to the surface per square nanometer (3.6 micromoles m" ) (94). 

The toluene solution of the chlorosilanes is hydrolyzed, and the aqueous hydrochloric acid is separated, washed, and then heated in the presence of a mild condensation catalyst to adjust the resin to the proper viscosity and cure time. Fillers can be added prior to the removal of the solvent and isolation of the final resin. A resin can also be prepared from phenyl-trichlorosilane alone to give a tough, infusible resin that can be cast from solvents to give a clear film [74, 75]. 

Silicone resins for coatings resemble some phenol-formaldehyde polymers in that polymerization takes place in two stages. A trifunctional monomer such as phenyl-trichlorosilane may be hydrolyzed to the relatively stable hexamer (and related structures modified by comonomers for better solubility).
