10 grams of /3-phenyl-a-methyl- 3,/3 -dihydroxy-diethylamine hydrochlgride (produced by hydrogenation in the presence of palladium and charcoal of /3-phenyl-a-methyl-/3-keto-/3 -hydroxy-N-benzyl-diethylamine hydrochloride obtained from bromopropiophenone by reacting with benzyl-ethanolamine), are warmed with 10% hydrochloric acid for 6 hours on a water bath. 

After working up in the usual manner, the hydrochloride of the 2-phenyl-3-methyl-morpho-line crystallizes out from methanolic hydrochloric acid and acetone, IVIP= 182°C, according to U.S. Patent 2,835,669.

The starting materials for the overall process are phenylacetonitrile with bis-chloroethyl toluene sulfonyl amide. These react to give a product which hydrolyzes to normeperidine (4-carboethoxv-4-phenvlpiperidine). Condensation of that material with benzoylethylene gives the ketone /3-(4-carboethoxy-4-phenylpiperidino)propiophenone.

Infra-red Spectrum. Principal peaks at wavenumbers 1710, 698, 1230,1136,1175,1205 (phenoperidine hydrochloride, KBrdisk). 

Dose. 0.5 to 1 mg of phenoperidine hydrochloride intravenously. With assisted ventilation, an initial intravenous dose of 2 to 5 mg may be given.

It is employed for the control of agitated patients in acute psychoses. It is normally used in conjunction with an analgesic for instance fantanyl citrate or phenoperidine hydrochloride to maintain the patient in a state of neuroleptanalgesia whereby he is calm and indifferent to his surroundings and able to cooperate with the surgeon.
