Phellandrene

Wash with rectified spirits (azeotrope of Ethanol + water, also known as "grain alcohol") to dissolve the Safrole, leaving the Phellandrene behind. Of course, one should use only the amount of alcohol necessary to dissolve the expected yield of Safrole. 1 1 seems to work, but could be an excessive amount. 

Note that this procedure has been modified from the earlier version in that we no longer distill off the Phellandrene, rather, we target it s insolubility in ethanol as a means to separate it from sa-frole. I think we can all agree that this is a much better way, eh ...

Wild bitter fennel oil differs considerably from the ahcve-described oils. Its specific gnivily varies from 0 L05 to 0 925, aud optical rotation + 40° to + 66 - -Anethol is present onlv in traces, but a [air amount of phellandrene is present. Tardy isolated from this oil a crystalline compound melting at 213", which is possibly di-para-1 Bull. Sat. Chin., xvil, 660. 

The presence of lerpineue conld not be proved. No fraction gave the nitrite reaction, and auv considerable quantity ot phellandrene is therefore Out of ihc question. Tjganda Hlemi, from Canarimn, hiceinfw lhu, yields about 11 per eect. of essential oil of specific (Travitv () 84.5I and optical rotation + 9 20, It cootaiiis much phellandrene. 

The first type is representative of those eucalyptus trees whose oils contain the terpene pinene in marked quantity, cineol either not at all or only in small amount, and from which phellandrene is absent. 

The second type is characteristic of trees yielding oils which contain pinene, but are more or less rich in cineol and free from phellandrene. 

The third type represents trees in which phellandrene is an important constituent. 

Two isomeric terpenes are known under the name of phellandrene. Before the distinction between the two bodies was recognised, phellandrene had been discovered and reported in a number of essential oils, so that in many cases it is impossible at present to decide which isomer is that actually present in a ven oil. The two terpenes—still another case of the absurd nomenclature which has been retained for so many of the terpenes—are known as a-phellandrene and /3-phellandrene.
