Pharmaceutical products synthetic chemical drugs

NDAs and PLAs are formal applications made to the FDA by pharmaceutical sponsors to manufacture and market therapeutic drugs in the United States. NDAs are for synthetic chemical drugs and PLAs are for biological products. This chapter uses the term NDA to refer to both types of applications. See chapter 6 for additional discussion of the drug approval process in the United States. 

Second, the preparation of new chemicals for new pharmaceutical products, synthetic materials and foods could add to the hazards which workers and customers face. Thermal instability and explosive behaviour can be extremely destructive and costly events. Reaction calorimetry and similar techniques can help to predict the likely behaviour of chemicals when reactions, transport and storage are concerned. Physiological behaviour may vary with the nature and form of a drug, and the nature and interconversion of these forms is often studied by thermal and calorimetric methods.

First of all, there is the scope of GLP as it is defined in the OECD Principles, and which states that GLP encompasses the non-clinical safety testing of test items contained in pharmaceutical products, pesticide products, cosmetic products, veterinary drugs as well as food additives, feed additives, and industrial chemicals. These test items are frequently synthetic chemicals, but may be of natural or biological origin and, in some circumstances, may be living organisms. The purpose of testing these test items is to obtain data on their properties and/or their safety with respect to human health and/or the environment. (OECD, 1998). GLP is thus applicable to safety studies in two major areas Effects on human health and on the environment. These two areas may share some types of studies that have to be conducted in order to test the safety of the respective test item, but other study types may exclusively be required for one or the other area. 

This book may also attract a wider range of readers, since synthetic membranes are now considered to be one of the most important tools in the areas of seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, water production, food processing, treatment of pharmaceutical products, air and water cleaning, separation of chemical and petrochemical products, drug release, and other biomedical applications.
