Scientists in the pharmaceutical industry, for example, need to closely examine the physical structure and dispersion characteristics of the active components (chemicals) used in the development of drugs, as well as the materials used to coat medical devices such as pacemakers or other implants. Rheology is the study of flow and deformation of materials under the influence of external forces. It involves the viscosity characteristics of powders, liquids, and semisolids. Rheological studies are also important in the industrial manufacture and applications of plastic materials, lubricating materials, coatings, inks, adhesives, and food products. Flow properties of pharmaceutical disperse systems can be of particular importance, especially for topical products. In this paper, the water sorption of two commercially available vinylidene chloride copolymers is studied using IGC at low probe concentrations. The copolymers are a poly (vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride) copolymer (Saran B) and a poly (vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile) copolymer (Saran F). These copolymers are extensively used in the form of films, coatings, and film laminates in various industrial applications (for example, packaging of foods and pharmaceuticals) where their diffusion characteristics are of prime importance. [Pg.78]
