Table 13.1 illustrates the decrease in stool frequency following phage therapy with an improvement observed in 50% of cases within 1-3 days 24.2% of cases showed a decrease in the frequency of stools within the first 24 hours of phage application. In 25.6% of cases there was no stool improvement observed or rehef of other disease symptoms, such as bleeding. Of 113 cases with blood in the stools, 28.3% showed relief of this symptom within the 24 hours of phage administration and a further 27.4% of patients showed an improvement within 2-3 days. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be destroyed with phage therapy that bathes infections with solutions containing phages (Svoboda, 2009). If the phages delivered are tailored to the specific type of bacteria to be controlled, then dramatic results can be obMned.

Since the early 1920s these phages have been used in clinical practice (Abedon et al., 2011) however, interest in them decreased with the discovery of antibiotics. Nevertheless, the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria has opened a second window of opportunity for phage therapy in bacterial infections (Kutter et al 2010 Torres-Barcelo and Hochberg, 2016).

During these challenge studies S. iniae strains re-isolated from dead fish were resistant to infection by the phages used. These resistant strains remained virulent to Japanese flounder when tested by i.p. injection at 10 CFU/fish. The authors indicate that there is a need for new phages that can kill these resistant strains, and that further investigations are required to establish phage therapy of 5. iniae infections in Japanese flounder.
