Petroleum sulfonates equivalent weight

The equivalent weight distribution of natural petroleum sulfonates depends on the boiling range of the aromatic components in the feedstock, but generally consists of a broad continuum of molecular weight components (139). For many appHcations it is precisely this property of derived petroleum sulfonates that provides the unique properties, such as emulsification. Conversely, most oil-soluble synthetic sulfonates have much more limited components and molecular weight distribution. 

TRS 10-410/IBA. Solutions containing 5.0% by weight TRS 10-410 surfactant (Witco) and 3.0% reagent grade isobutyl alcohol (IBA) were used in the salinity range of 0.7 to 2.3 gm/dl. The surfactant is a 61.5% - active mixture of petroleum sulfonates with an equivalent weight of 424. 

Experimental Materials and Procedure The equilibrium adsorption of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), and deoiled TRS 10-410 (a commercial petroleum sulfonate with an equivalent weight of 418) on silica gel (Davison Grade 62), and crushed Berea sandstone was measured at 30°C at two brine concentrations (0 and 1 wt.% NaCl). 

The primary surfactant in all chemical slugs and surfactant blends is Stepan Chemical Company s Petrostep 450—a 60 percent active petroleum sulfonate of approximately 450 average equivalent weight. The cosurfactant is Shell Chemical Company s NEODOL 25-3S—a 60 percent active alcoholethoxysulfate of about 440 average equivalent weight. The amounts of primary surfactant and cosurfactant in chemical slugs and surfactant blends are expressed on an as supplied" basis.
