Several factors contribute to the field-induced structural anisotropy that leads to optical anisotropy and hence to birefringence. All involve the particles polarization by the field and the partial alignment of their resultant dipole moments parallel to E. The resultant dipole moment / of a particle is the vector sum of its permanent and induced dipole moments. At the molecular level, electronic and atomic polarization occurs, the extent of which depends on the nature and symmetry of the molecule and on its polarizabilities (a and ax) along the parallel and perpendicular directions relative to the electric field or, for cylindrical symmetry, along the molecular axes a and b (a and a ). Naturally, the concept of the polarizability tensor is applicable to an assembly of molecules as a whole, e.g., a colloidal particle, as well. For such systems, and also for macromolecules and polyelectrolytes in an insulating medium, interfacial polarization may also have a major or even dominant contribution to the resultant dipole moment. [Pg.439]

The goal of this chapter is to review recent advances in our understanding of the magnetic structure, the interfacial magnetism, and the origin of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of lanthanide-transition metal nanoscale multilayers, here denoted as R/T. We do not intend to review all of the recent work on these subjects, but rather will focus on discussing either newly understood phenomena by means of a few illustrative experiments, or those aspects which are not yet understood and therefore require additional work. [Pg.83]

Mechanical Properties and Structural Performance. As a result of the manufacturing process, some cellular plastics have an elongated cell shape and thus exhibit anisotropy in mechanical, thermal, and expansion properties (35,36). Efforts are underway to develop manufacturing techniques that reduce such anisotropy and its effects. In general, higher strengths occur for the paraHel-to-rise direction than in the perpendicular-to-rise orientation. Properties of these materials show variabiUty due to specimen form and position in the bulk material and to uncertainty in the axes with respect to direction of foam rise. Expanded and molded bead products exhibit Httie anisotropy. [Pg.335]

The structure of CBCF is shown in the SEM micrograph in Fig. 4. The crenellated surface of the rayon derived carbon fibers is clearly visible, as is the phenolic derived carbon binder. The preferred orientation of the fibers (resulting from the slurry molding operation) is obvious in Fig. 4, and imparts considerable anisotropy to the material. The molding direction is perpendicular to the plane of the carbon fibers in Fig. 4. [Pg.174]
