Sulfur peroxo acids

A number of lower sulfur oxides have been described. Most of these oxides are derived from cyclic sulfur polymorphs and were usually prepared by oxidation of these molecules by organic peroxo acids. The oxides have the general formula SraO and n may vary from 5 to 10. For n = 7 even the dioxide S702 is known.4 Not all of these phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction, but the molecular structures are certain with respect to vibrational spectroscopy. The oxygen atom is in exo position with respect to the sulfur ring as it has been shown by X-ray diffraction for SgO and S70, respectively (Figure 2).5,6... [Pg.346]

Single crystals of peroxomonosulfuric acid, H2S05 (also known as Caro s acid) have been prepared by the reaction of fuming sulfuric acid and H202. In the crystal structure, the molecules are connected via hydrogen bonds.49 The distance within the peroxo group of the anion is 1.46 A. [Pg.353]

Impurities which are sometimes present in such samples can be detected most easily by adding acid and identifying the products. The O—0 bond distance has been shown to be 1.47 A., and the Co—0—0 angle is IIS0. A red hydroperoxo complex [(NHs)5Co(02H)Co(NHs)5]H3(S04)4 has been prepared by treating the sulfate salt of the peroxo complex with ice-cold 3 M sulfuric acid. ... [Pg.199]

Gne of the most interesting simple inorganic compounds reported in recent years is peroxodisulfuryl difluoride, F—SO2—02—S02—F (mp, —55° C bp, 67° C). This is both a peroxo compound and an acid fluoride but prepared by the fiuorination of sulfur trioxide. The compound can be... [Pg.295]

The first hydrogen peroxide plant to go on-stream based on the electrochemical process was in 1908 at the Osterreichische Chemische Werke in Weissenstein. The Weissenstein process was adapted in 1910 to afford the Miincher process developed by Pietzsch and Adolph at the Elecktrochemische Werke, Munich. In 1924, Reidel and Lowenstein used ammonium sulfate under the conditions of electrolysis instead of sulfuric acid, and the resulting ammonium peroxodisulfate (Reidel-Lowenstein process) or potassium peroxo-disulfate (Pietzsch-Adolph process) was hydrolysed to hydrogen peroxide. As a result of this process, production of hydrogen peroxide as 100% m/m rose to approximately 35 000 metric tonnes per annum.5... [Pg.2]

Ozone is commonly prepared by silent electric discharge in oxygen, which gives up to 10% 03. The gas is blue. Pure ozone can be obtained by fractional liquefaction of 02—03 mixtures. There is a two-phase liquid system the one with 25% of 03 is stable, but a deep purple phase with 70% of 03 is explosive, as is the deep blue pure liquid (bp -112°C). The solid (mp -193°C) is black violet. Small quantities of 03 are formed in electrolysis of dilute sulfuric acid, in some chemical reactions producing 02, and by the action of uv light on 02 the combination of certain peroxo radicals and some chemical reactions may also result in 03.19... [Pg.453]

BIS (AMMONIUM) PEROXO-DISULFATE (7727-54-0) HgN OgSj Aqueous solution is a medium-strong acid reaction with water produces oxygen. A powerful oxidizer. Reacts with combustible materials reducing agents organic materials, finely divided and powdered metals, with risk of fire and explosion. Mixture with sodium peroxide produces a friction-, heat-, and water-sensitive explosive. A mixture with powdered almninum and water may explode . Aqueous solution violently attacks and dissolves iron. In temperatures above 248°F/120°C releases corrosive fumes of ammoiua, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides. [Pg.137]

Interestingly, it has been found that the formation of SOA is accelerated in the presence of SO2 and sulfuric acid (Jang et al. 2002, Edney et al. 2005, Surrat et al. 2007). The first step in atmospheric SO2 oxidation is OH addition (Chapter 5.5.2.1) and this radical can react with alkoxy radicals (RO) to form sulfonic acid and further with organic peroxo radicals to form dialkyl sulfates ... [Pg.416]
