Oxidation with Peroxo Acids of Sulfur

An acid-catalyzed pathway has been identified in the oxidation of iron (II) by peroxodisulfate by studying this well-characterized reaction over a wider acidity range. The oxidation of nitrilotriacetatocobalt(II) by this reagent has also been examined. Many reactions of peroxodisulfate are catalyzed by metal ions, through the formation of their higher oxidation states. However, doubts have been expressed over previous work that assigns this mechanism to the catalysis by Cu(II) of the malic acid-peroxodisulfate reaction. [Pg.97]

The decomposition of peroxomonosulfate, equation (20), is catalyzed by the dual catalysts Ag and S20 , with a rate law that is first order in both catalysts only, while both oxygen atoms in the dioxygen product are [Pg.97]

Peroxomonosulfate oxidizes VO , the SOJ radical ion being involved in the mechanism. The oxidation of peroxovanadium(V), VO3, by HSO5 is catalyzed by VO, with a rate law rate = ki [HS05][VO ]o, being the rate constant found for the VO /HSOJ reaction. It is suggested that SOi, formed in the rate-determining step, oxidizes VO3 to [Pg.98]
