Performance Metrics for Behavioral Safety

Safe behavior results should be tracked, graphed, and posted regularly for everyone to see. There are at least two benefits expected from posting safe behavior percentages  

Posting provides everyone with knowledge of results. No one knows what the percent safe behavior is in various areas without behavioral sampling, tracking, and posting. This awareness of risky behavior and trends is a beginning step toward improvement. 

It should be noted that percent safe should not be overly emphasized as there can be a temptation to falsify the numbers. 

As noted earlier, these measures add a proactive dimension to traditional safety measures, which tend to be based on injuries, failures, and mistakes. These behavioral measures are all positive and measure what an organization and individuals achieve and accomplish, rather than their failures.
