Preliminary studies undertaken by the author reveal that thermal batteries using advanced titanium alloys could meet stringent structural, performance, and reliability requirements. Batteries for launch vehicle applications require stringent electrical, thermal, and mechanical specification requirements. Such a battery must use advanced materials for its critical elements. Thermal batteries incorporating titanium alloy as early as 1999 were designed and developed for space applications, and these batteries can operate reliably in a high-acceleration environment [8].
