Various sources publish data of permissible vibration levels for employees (usually as a graph of acceleration against frequency). These are designed to avoid injury and cannot be used as a guide to the degree of disturbance caused by vibration. Vibration caused by neighboring industrial premises when received at a residence as vibration (i.e. no noise implications) has been considered a nuisance when it is just perceptible. 

Patients seen for flashbacks are treated with oral diazepam (15—30 mg/day for adults) if symptoms of anxiety are severe (Rumack 1987). Neuroleptics, especially haloperidol, have been implicated in a transient increase in visual flashbacks and are not recommended (Moskowitz 1971 Strassman 1984). Risperidone and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may also worsen symptoms of hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (Halpern and Pope 2003). The patient needs assurance of the self-limiting nature of the phenomenon and its decreasing frequency of reoccurrence with time. The patient should be reminded that any future use of hallucinogens or marijuana may precipitate similar symptoms (Strassman 1984). 

Still, some members of the lay public are clearly skeptical of science and scientists, as indicated by the view of the profession presented on the cover of a national magazine in Figure 6.110 Although we may be assured that scientists as a group are no more deficient in morals than, say, cartoonists, it is important to understand the basis of public perceptions and to examine the practical implications for laboratory management. Industrial products are very widely distributed and many are used intimately. There are real consequences that can arise from a serious error in manufacture or design, as illustrated by the case of L-tryptophan.

By decoupling risk response behavior into the separate components of risk perception and risk attitude, a more robust conceptualization and prediction of consumer reactions are possible. Kanthamani and Kelly were convinced that the results in this series had to involve a great deal of PK, rather than just clairvoyant perception and shuffling until the decks happened to match, because they statistically calculated the number of shuffles needed by chance alone to make various numbers of matches between the decks. For example, to score 5 exact hits by chance, one would have to shuffle the call deck an average of 325 times. Yet, BD usually shuffled 3 to 6 times and sometimes only one or two times, so he must have been using PK very strongly to get these results. The implications of the psychic shuffle for professional gamblers are most intriguing. 

A deeper perception of the mechanistic implications of equation (9.2) can be had if the rational activity coefficients are described on the molecular level using the methods of statistical mechanics. This approach is the analogue of the statistical mechanical theory of activity coefficients for species in aqueous solution (Sposito, 1983). Fundamental to it is the prescription of surface speciation and the dependence of the rational activity coefficient on surface characteristics. Three representative molecular models of adsorption following this paradigm are summarised in Table 9.8. Each has been applied with success to describe the surface reactions of soil colloids (Goldberg, 1992).
