The furans (31, 32), isolated from the basidiomycete Irpex lacteus, were shown to be nematocidal (LD50 50 ppm) towards A. besseyi [100]. The pentyl furan (31) was also isolated from an ascomycete and shown to have comparable activity (LD50 75 ig/ml and 50 pg/ml) towards C. ele-gans and M. incognita [101]. 

Figure 4 shows the mean relative abundance of selected compounds in the total chromatogram before, and 1 and 2 days after the introduction of the Eucalyptus leaves. The data from this experiment suggest that some compounds such as homogentisic acid and 5-methyl-2-furoic acid appeared 24 hours after the introduction of the Eucalyptus leaf diet without being detectable prior to the start of the experiment. After 48 hours the amount of those compounds in the secretion decreased to the pre-experimental level. A similar increase in abundance could be detected in 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, 2-pentyl furan and oleic acid ester 24 hours after the introduction. As with oleate, some volatile decomposition compounds are formed from linoleate hydroperoxides that cannot be explained by the classical A and B cleavage mechanism, including acetaldehyde, 2-pentylfuran, methyl heptanoate, 2-octenal, 2,4-nonadienal, methyl 8-oxooctanoate, and methyl 10-oxodecanoate. Although hydroperoxides derived from both autoxidation and from photosensitized oxidation of linoleate form the same volatile decomposition products, significant quantitative differences are noted. A soln. of -butyllithium in hexane added under Nj at -25° to a stirred soln. of trimethylsulfonium fluoroborate in anhydrous dimethoxyethane, allowed to stand 15 min. at -20°, cooled to -70°, treated with a soln. of the startg. a-/i-butyl-thiomethyleneketone in anhydrous dimethoxyethane, and the product isolated after 1 hr. at - 70° using mercuric sulfate in the work-up -> 3- -hexyl-4- -pentyl-furan. Several eompoimds belonging to different chemical classes have been identified and quantified in com oil. Volatile compounds including 2,4-decadienal, nonanal, hexanoic acid, 2-pentyl-furan, pentanal, 2-decenal, hexanal, and pentane identified in com oils fi om supercritical fluid-extracted oils have been analyzed with the help of the headspace gas chromatography (GC) (Figure 16) (Snyder King, 1994). 

Pentyl furan, which has been was identified in com oil is a volatile compound obtained from the oxidation of the com oil. The flavor threshold of this compound in oil, at room temperature, is 1 ppm. At concentrations of 1-10 ppm, it imparts, the oil a characteristic beany odor (Krishnamurthy et al., 1967 Steenson et al., 2002)...
