In contrast to other crystaUine nitrates, pentaerythrol tetranitrate (PETN C Hg(0N02)4) is a crystalline nitrate ester similar to NG and NC. Though PETN is one of the most powerful energetic materials used in explosives, no excess oxidizer fragments are formed when it decomposes. Thus, PETN is not used as an oxidizer of propellants. 

Metriol trinitrate can be prepared by nitration of methyltrimethylol-methane (Metriol) with mixed acid. Metriol is prepared by condensation of propanal with formaldehyde in a manner similar to that employed in the synthesis of pentaerythrol. 

It is prepared by introducing pentaerythrol into concentrated nitric acid with efficient stirring and cooling.

As an example, Alpert and Regnier (26) coated silica with polyethylenimine 6 and crosslinked the product subsequently with a suitable crosslinker. Their preferred crosslinker was pentaerythrol tetraglycidyl ether. The coating was also applied to alumina and titania, and lately to zirconia (27). 

Examples of explosives are the TNT (trinitrotoluene), RDX (hexogen), PETN (pentaerythrol trinitrate), while examples of explosives devices are detonating cord, blasting caps, any sort of bombs and rockets...
