Pentaerythritol chloral

Acetaldehyde is an important intermediate in the production of acetic acid, acetic anhydride, ethyl acetate, peracetic acid, pentaerythritol, chloral, glyoxal, and alkylamines. Acetaldehyde is also a valuable intermediate in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, pyridine derivatives, and other chemical products. [Pg.118]

PRACTICE EXAMPLE B The chlorine-containing narcotic drug pentaerythritol chloral has 21.51% C, 2.22% H, and 17.64% O, by mass, as its other elements. Its molecular mass is 726 u. What are the empirical and molecular formulas of pentaerythritol chloral ... [Pg.81]

Acetaldehyde, first used extensively during World War I as a starting material for making acetone [67-64-1] from acetic acid [64-19-7] is currendy an important intermediate in the production of acetic acid, acetic anhydride [108-24-7] ethyl acetate [141-78-6] peracetic acid [79-21 -0] pentaerythritol [115-77-5] chloral [302-17-0], glyoxal [107-22-2], aLkylamines, and pyridines. Commercial processes for acetaldehyde production include the oxidation or dehydrogenation of ethanol, the addition of water to acetylene, the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, and the direct oxidation of ethylene [74-85-1]. In 1989, it was estimated that 28 companies having more than 98% of the wodd s 2.5 megaton per year plant capacity used the Wacker-Hoechst processes for the direct oxidation of ethylene. [Pg.48]

Uses Manufacture of acetic acid, acetic anhydride, aldol, aniline dyes, 1-butanol, 1,3-butylene glycol, cellulose acetate, chloral, 2-ethylhexanol, paraldehyde, pentaerythritol, peracetic acid, pyridine derivatives, terephthalic acid, trimethylolpropane, flavors, perfumes, plastics, synthetic rubbers, disinfectants, drugs, explosives, antioxidants, yeast silvering mirrors hardening gelatin fibers. [Pg.57]

Use Manufacture of acetic acid and acetic anhydride, n-butanol, 2-ethylhexanol, peracetic acid, aldol, pentaerythritol, pyridines, chloral, 1,3-butylene glycol, and trimethylolpropane synthetic flavors. [Pg.5]

Symmetric carbonates of guaiacol or ethyl salicylate are crystalline solids (Figure 41.12), pentaerythritol tetranitrate is the solid counterpart of the liquid trinitrine and petrichlo-ral is again a stabilized chloral derivative. Methenamine, formulated as an enteric-coated tablet, is used as a urinary tract antibacterial. Following absorption, the compound is eliminated in the urine where formaldehyde is generated in the acidic environment. [Pg.847]
