Styptic pencils

Potassium alum, which also occurs naturally as the mineral kalinite [7784-24-9], KAl(SO 2 12H20, sp gr 1.75, is used ia tanning skins, as a mordant ia dyeiag, and ia the pharmaceutical and cosmetic iadustries (see Pharmaceuticals Cosmetics). It is used as a styptic pencil and as a hardening agent and set accelerator for cement and plaster. The ACGIH threshold limit value TWA is 2 mgAl/m (1 ).

Silver nitrate is used in "styptic pencils," which help to cauterize small nicks and cuts that occur during shaving. Silver nitrate can be prepared by dissolving metallic silver in concentrated nitric acid, with hydrogen gas being an additional product of the reaction. Write the unbalanced chemical equation for this process. 

Products and Uses Prevents skin irritation in antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride. Also in after-shave lotions, and in styptic pencils. Put in animal glue, packaging materials, pickle relish, pickles, potatoes, and shrimp packs as a firming agent. 

Important inorganic aluminum compounds are aluminum sulfate (e.g., for water treatment), potassium alum (KA1(S04)2-12H20 e.g., for tanning skins, mordants, coagulating agents, styptic pencils, cosmetics, and hardening and setting acceleration in the production of marble cement and alabaster plaster), sodium and barium aluminates (e.g., for water purification, acceleration of concrete solidification, production of synthetic zeolites, in the paper industry, and in the enamel industry), and the Friedel-Crafts catalyst aluminum chloride [4].
