GE foul release coatings are comprised of a silicone topcoat and a silicone oil additive, typically at 10 or 20 weight percent. The silicone topcoat, RTVll (GE Silicones) is a room temperature condensation moisture cure system, which contains a silanol terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), CaCOj filler, tetraethoxy-orthosilicate (TEOS) crosslinker and dibutyltin dilaurate, a Sn(IV) catalyst. Here we outline an approach that has been taken to develop Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) systems, which have property changes that are easier to predict. The problems associated with the inclusion of a filler phase that is required for PDMS systems to have many useful physical properties have been addressed by producing nano filled equivalents. It is shown that such systems offer easier control over the materials produced whilst also resulting in a simplification of physical properties. The production of foamed systems, which introduces an additional variable, is also discussed. The influence of foam structure upon the measured properties of a material is outlined and implications for sample production and the development of predictive ageing models are explored. [Pg.279]

Studies of uniaxial extension on noncrystallizable elastomer, poly(phenyl methyl siloxane) showed results which are consistent and comparable with those obtained for PDMS, suggesting that the crystallization is not important for this type of reinforcement [20]. Fillers are used in these formulations to increase strength through reinforcement. The molecules migration can be affected by the presence of fillers in the material formulation. Especially in the case of ATH, laboratory studies have revealed that increased filler levels correspond to decreased migration rates, mainly for two reasons [79, 80]. Firstly, the ATH particles attract the PDMS molecules and therefore the movement to the surface is more difficult. This action becomes stronger for smaller ATH particle size [80]. Secondly, for a certain formulation the addition of filler corresponds to lower amounts of silicone fluid and therefore LMW molecules. [Pg.11]
