Several studies of ERPs and brain function have produced mixed results due to methodological confounds. When subjects are screened for medical and psychiatric illness, and age effects were controlled, THC does not alter brain stem and auditory or visual P300 responses (Patrick et al. 1997). Despite daily cannabis use in subjects, the only finding consisted of an elevated auditory P50 amplitude.

Thiokol was developed by J.C. Patrick in 1926. Patrick was born in 1892 in Jefferson County, Missouri. He was a physician rather than a chemist. Before completing his medical school studies World War I began and he tried to join the U.S. Air Corps. Because of poor health, he could not meet the standards for combat service but was accepted in the U.S. Medical Corps... 

For short-term experiments, thorium-232 is considered radiologically inert since its half-life is so long. Therefore, the chemical toxicity of thorium was tested using this isotope. The low chemical toxicity of thorium was evidenced by the lack of initial systemic effects in patients injected with Thorotrast and in occupationally exposed workers. Animal studies also showed low toxicity (Guimaraes et al. 1955 Patrick and Cross 1948). Natural thorium (thorium-232) is toxic only after a latency period of 20-30 years, when the radiological effects are manifested. 

When Ruth Patrick retired from the post of curator of limnology at the academy in 1961, Cairns was seiected as her replacement. He held that position for five years before accepting an appointment as professor of zoology at the University of Kansas, in 1968, Cairns left Kansas to accept a post as research professor of zoology at Virginia Tech. Two years later, he became director of the University Centerfor Environmental and Hazardous Materials Study at Virginia Tech and, in 1972, was appointed University Distinguished Professor, a post he held until his formal retirement 24 years later. 

In 1947, Patrick established a new department of limnology (the study of lakes, ponds, and streams) at the academy, a department that is now known as the Patrick Center for Environmental Research. The purpose of the department has been to study the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, and wetlands, along with the impact of human activities on these systems. Patrick served as curator of the center and chair of the Department of Limnology at the academy for more than decades. In 2003, at the age of 94, she still held the titles of Senior Scientist and Francis Boyer Chair of Limnology at the academy.
