Pathological level

The underlying assumption of the MSLT is that lower scores indicate greater sleepiness and vice versa. A common rubric holds that a daily average score of less than 5 min indicates a pathological level of daytime sleepiness. This level is associated with impaired performance in patients and in sleep-deprived normal subjects (26). Scores of adult normal controls usually range from 10 to 20 min (27). Scores between 5 and 10 min indicate moderate sleepiness, and may or may not be associated with pathological conditions (23). 

Under ischemic conditions, accumulation of pathological levels of glutamate is accompanied by an early and robust activation of the proteolytic, calcium-dependent, enzyme calpain (Branca, 2004) that is maintained over 24-h period of reperfusion (Oka et al., 2006 Sakamoto et al., 2000) and is prevented by treatment with the NMDA receptor antagonist MK801 (Russo and Morrone, personal communication). 

On the other hand, oxidative stress has also been found to induce PSl transcription, thereby promoting production of pathological levels of Af) in AD (Tamagno et al., 2008). Indeed, it has been proposed that the pathophysiology of oxidative stress is reflected in damage to tissue biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, and DNA by free radicals (Migliore and Coppede, 2009). 

We observed a lethal case (treatment with doxycycline was unsuccesful) showing massive amounts of leptospirae in the serum and in the centrifuged urine under dark-field examination. Maximum values were GPT 4,200 Ull, GOT 2,290 Ull, GDH 1,080 Ull, serum bilirubin 11 mgldl and Quick s value 17%, but with normal AP ( ) such pathological levels have repeatedly been reported in the literature. Autopsy revealed severe interstitial nephritis, tubular necrosis (laboratory findings corresponding to severe renal insufficiency), brain oedema (680 g), severe... 

The general application of tensiometry was shown in [241] and it was impressively demonstrated how large the capacity of interfacial studies for medical research is. For example, selected dynamic surface tension values of serum or urine correlate with the health state of patients suffering from various diseases. In the course of a medical treatment these values then change from a pathological level back to the normal values determined as standard for a certain group of people (age and sex). 

Our results may be interpreted in different ways higher levels of cyclic 3 5 AMP may be produced in EFA-deficient rats or 3 5 AMP may be slowly metabolized or eventually normal concentrations of 3 5 AMP may activate more effectively the lipolytic system. This suggests however that the 3 5 AMP system which is activated in rat adipose tissue by catecholamines, ACTH and the peptide hormones, represents a point of attack for prostaglandins as well, and that the interaction between lipolytic hormones and this physiological inhibitor of lipolysis may be critical for the understanding of normal and pathologic levels of lipolysis.
