The standard requires that measurements be defined, analyzed, and reported to management at appropriate stages of product realization and that these measurements include quality risk, costs, lead times, critical paths, and others as appropriate. 

At this point in the integration project you have obtained buy-in from senior management and have some thoughts on where the benefits will arise and what problems may be thrown in your path. The next steps are to firm up your analysis of the current status of PSM and ESH management and develop a more detailed plan and cost for the project. At the same time you will be developing better estimates of the benefits that will be derived from integration. 

Most detailed programs for plant-related projects are prepared using simple critical path analysis (CPA) techniques. The flow properties of the polymer must be matched to the mold (or vice versa) in order to achieve optimum product quality. In particular, we must manage the pressure drop between the gate and the furthest extent of the flow path. Articles with thin walls, such as margarine tubs, require low viscosity resins. In other cases, the situation is more complex and the cavity may need to be designed so that the product is thicker near the gate than it is at its extremities. The development of complex products is aided by computer modeling of melt flow within the mold cavity. 

This presentation demonstrates that a small minicomputer can be used to provide a full range of functions for collection and interactive reduction of data from a size-exclusion liquid chromatograph. A number of different users have collected in excess of 5000 chromatograms using this equipment. The experience gained with this system has influenced our approach to the automation of other analytical instruments. Careful attention to control paths, provision of "user friendly" access to the system functions, and careful management of the data archiving functions are crucial to the success of such efforts.
