Pasted type positive electrode

Batteries are of many different types, but they all produce an electric current via a circuit using a positive electrode, a negative electrode and an electrolyte acting as an ionic conductor. If the electrolyte is liquid, the battery is called Vet and if it is a powder or paste it is called dry . Some batteries are re-chargeable. 

However the battery structure has changed substantially from initial ones. In the early days of lead acid batteries, the corrosion layers formed on the surface of lead sheet were used as active materials. But at present, the pasted type electrodes, which are made from lead-oxide paste and lead-alloy grid, are used generally. Then such pasted type electrodes are charged in sulfuric acid to make positive and negative plates and have much larger effective surface area which leads to larger capacity compared to the batteries of the early days. 

The sintered type and the pasted type are in popular in a positive electrode. 

Positive electrodes for use in NiMH batteries for industrial and transportation application, whether cylindrical or prismatic, can be of the sintered or pasted type also common to NiCd batteries. 

It is characteristic for battery manufacture that lead dioxide (Pb02) as the charged state of the active material is always generated by electrochemical oxidation. Thus, electron-conducting bridges are established between the fine particles, and a matrix is formed of comparatively low electronic resistance. Three general types of positive electrodes are mainly used today Plante, pasted, and tubular plates, which vary not only in their design but also in the way they are manufactured. 

These batteries are not yet available in a sealed form. This type of battery comprises a positive nickel electrode of the sintered or pasted type similar to that used in the nickel—cadmium battery. 

Voltammetry is a term used to include all the methods that measure current-potential curves (voltammograms) at small indicator electrodes other than the DME [6], There are various types of voltammetric indicator electrodes, but disk electrodes, as in Fig. 5.17, are popular. The materials used for disk electrodes are platinum, gold, graphite, glassy carbon (GC), boron-doped diamond8, carbon paste, etc. and they can be modified in various ways. For electrode materials other than mercury, the potential windows are much wider on the positive side than for mercury.
