The reaaor residual heat is removed by a passive residual heat removal stem which connects to the intermediate circuit. There are two independent trains of theRHRS which composed of three natural circulation loops. (See Fig. 4)... [Pg.64]

In addition to these features, all designs allow for the passive residual heat removal in case of loss of power. CANDU 3 emphasized the assurance of high capacity factor, the maximization of component life and the easy replacement of components. [Pg.112]

A passive residual heat removal (PRHR) nozzle attaches to the bottom of the channel head of the loop-1 steam generator on the cold-leg portion of the head. This nozzle provides recirculated flow from the PRHR heat exchanger to cool the primary side under emergency conditions. A separate nozzle on one of the steam generator channel heads is connected to a line from the CVCS. The nozzle provides for purification flow and makeup flow from the CVCS to the RCS. [Pg.70]

If the duty systems are unavailable, or are imable to control the ult, passive residual heat removal (PRHR) is initiated and the CMTs actuated to inject borated water into the reactor coolant system (RCS). In most cases this will be sufficient to manage the fault for at least 72 hours. [Pg.118]

If the secondary heat removal system is not operable then the passive residual heat removal heat exchanger, in conjunction with the passive containment cooling system, is designed to remove decay heat for an indefinite time in a closed-loop mode of operation. [Pg.191]

The passive residual heat removal heat exchanger is designed to cool the reactor coolant system to 216°C (420°F) in 36 hours, with or without reactor coolant pumps operating (Reference 6.1, Section 6.3.1.1.1). This allows the reactor coolant system to be depressurised and the stress in the reactor coolant system and connecting pipe to be reduced to low levels. This also allows plant conditions to be established for initiation of normal residual heat removal system operation. [Pg.191]

The in-contaimnent refuelling water storage tank provides a heat sink for the passive residual heat removal heat exchanger, which is used to remove decay heat from the core in the event that the steam generators are unable to perform that function. [Pg.206]
