Passion research needs

The last question usually has an obvious answer the need for a champion. The need derives from the common experience that drug research programs often go through lengthy periods of stalemate. During these periods, passion and conviction are needed to prevent the faint hearts from quitting. [Pg.278]

No matter what topic you choose or what subject matter you ultimately investigate, the process is the same. You need to take your time, gather good and reliable sources, record your information carefully, and write it in a lively, informative way. It is also important to enjoy what you are writing about and to have passion for your subject matter. As you begin to choose a subject, you can use some of the very broad topic areas suggested here or you can research others. Be persistent as you conduct your research and try to get as many different opinions from as many different sources as you can in order to come to your own conclusions. Just remember to let your writing and evidence speak for itself. If you do, your passion and dedication to your subject matter will be evident. [Pg.136]

There are several books on the history of the development of taxol, which is one of the most remarkable stories in product development. In fact, it inspired the 1992 motion picture Medicine Man, starring Sean Connery as a research botanist looking for a cancer cure in the Brazilian rain forest. For a time, it became a moral drama pitting the needs of patients of intractable ovarian and breast cancer against the passions of environmentalists to preserve an obscure Pacific yew tree. Suffness and Wall are two of the principals in this story, and they wrote (1995) It [Taxol] is not an obvious winner till the very end, and there were a number of times till the very end when it seemed highly likely that it would not be put into development at all, or that once it had been accepted, it would be dropped. More than 30 years passed between the discovery of taxol, with its potential as an anticancer drug, and its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical use. [Pg.41]

If one thinks about the remaining 76,000 or more chemicals that are not part of routine high-volume chemical production and where these are routinely used, one need only to look to the world of research and development and to a lesser extent into small specialty chemical or niche chemical applications. There are now many people who passionately... [Pg.10]

Beyond the technical data, research, practices, and historic documentation regarding natural cement, the presentations made at the American Natural Cement Conferences capture the passion of the authors, for which no excuses need be given. There is an unfaltering dedication among those who are working to restore natural cement to its rightfiil place in masonry and historic technology. It is our hope that the reader... [Pg.208]
