In order to be successful any maintenance department needs strong internal customer—suppher partnerships. Such partnerships require opportunity for mutual benefits, predictable performance by each partner, and communication across links. 

The author wishes to acknowledge the efforts of his various research students from whose work some of the applications presented here have been drawn. In particular, I have enjoyed the excellent partnership in the pioneering PhD research of Mr (now Dr) Russell Kinghom. In addition, the provision of a gas chromatograph by Agilent Technologies and columns from SGE International have enabled our work to progress. 

The biggest attraction of fuel-cell-powered vehicles for car manufacturers is the fact that they no longer emit nitrogen oxides or hydrocarbons (or carbon dioxide if they are fuelled with pure hydrogen). (Burning hydrogen in internal combustion engines results in NOx emissions fuel-cell vehicles emit only water.) This effectively does away with one of the main environmental discussion points about traffic. In California, these zero-emission cars have been demanded since the foundation of the California Fuel Cell Partnership in 1999. 

The importance of education and training was also noticed by the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE), initiated in 2003 by the United States to co-ordinate research activities and to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen economy (see also Chapter 8). SOFCo, a limited partnership of Babcock and Wilcox (a McDermott International Company) and Ceramatec (an Elkem company), has tested a planar SOFC unit for the MEP program that will operate on logistic fuels. Honeywell tested their MEP unit on logistic fuel. 

By their very definition, the sky sciences are an open area. It was international partnerships within the European astrophysical community that opened the way to economic and political unification. Indeed, Europe began in the sky, with the foundation of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the European Space Agency (ESA), and today, astrophysical conferences have become planetary events. We can only rejoice ...
