Particle experiments, stabilizing

Dry dense medium (pneumatic fluidized-bed) separation has been used, but has not received wide attention by the industry. An area of promise for future development is the use of magnetically stabilized dense medium beds by using ferro or magnetic fluids (2,10). Laboratory and pilot-scale units such as Magstream are available. In this unit, material is fed into a rotating column of water-based magnetic fluid. Particles experience centtifugal forces and... [Pg.407]

Figure 7.14 The change in critical HLB values as a function of added salt concentration, where the salt is either NaCl or Nal. Results were obtained from measurements of particle size, stability, viscosity and emulsion type as a function of HLB for liquid paraffin-in-water emulsions stabilised by Brij 92-Brij 96 mixtures. Data from different experiments showed different critical values hence, on each diagram hatching represents the critical regions while data points actually recorded are shown. Results in (a) show particle size and stability data those in (b) show the HLB at transition from pseudoplastic to Newtonian flow properties (see section 7.3.10) and emulsion type (o/w— w/o) transitions. The stability of the colloid may be interpreted as the difficulty which the particles experience in getting over the energy battier. Particles which have been prepared in the fully dispersed state, for example by precipitation, have a distribution of velocities with an average thermal energy 3kT/2. Particles in the distribution with energy greater than Sj have sufficient impetus to cross the barrier, so then doublets will form in the adhesive potential well. Treating the formation of doublets as a reaction... [Pg.221]

Synthesis reaction could be stopped at any time ad-diting excess of sodium sulphide. Otherwise nanoparticle properties stabilization occured in 70 hours after the beginning of the reaction, which was shown by spectrophotometry. The concentration of initial nanoparticle suspensions was 3 10 cm , both non-stabilized and stabilized particles were used in the experiments. Stabilization was performed by 4-(dimethylamine)pyridine (DMAP). [Pg.149]

For our experiments we used a charge stabilized suspension of polystyrene spheres dispersed in ultrapure water (Batch No. PS-F-3390, Berlin Microparticles GmbH Germany). The diameter was determined by electron microscopy to be 590 nm. The size polydispersity was determined to be 5.8%. The particles are stabilized with CCX)H- and HSOq-groups and the effective charge was measured by conductivity to be Z = 3(XX) 100. For diluting of the stock solution to a definite volume fraction deionized water of a MilliQ water system was used. To adjust the salt concentration of the suspension NaCl was added to screen the interaction of the particles (typically 1 mM). [Pg.50]

When a particle is stabilized by a weak nucleophilic polymer such as polyphosphate, the adsorption of a stronger nucleophile such as T may lead to the detachment of the particle from the polymer chain. Only one experiment has yet been made to study this effect, using stopped flow technique. When a silver sol is mixed with a Nal solution under the conditions of Figure 27, the plasmon band of silver decreases within 0.2 s. The light scattering of the solution was also recorded. As can be seen, it decays within the same time interval. This effect has been attributed to the detachment of the particles from the polymer chain. However, at very much longer times, i.e. in the 100 s range, the... [Pg.130]

These principles are demonstrated in experiments on PVAc particles sterically stabilized with PEHMA. Phenanthrene [Phe] is a particularly useful label for these studies. It does not form excimers singlet selfquenching is inefficient. Its emission profile virtually always decays... [Pg.618]

Other variables in the factorial experiment also have an impact on the character of the final product. The amount of nonsolvent is a very important variable to examine as the pore size of the gel depends on the amount of it present in the formulation. The stabilizer acts as a suspending agent and influences the particle size of the GPC/SEC gel. Lower viscosity suspending agents... [Pg.166]
