As Samuel Parsons, the Superintendent of Parks for New York for a decade and chief landscape architect for projects in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, explains in his popular treatise on gardening from 1891, the home lawn firstly must be open and largely monocultural, in the landscape gardening tradition of previous centuries. [Pg.28]

Tin Plating. In 320 B.C., Theophrastus of Eresus mentioned the plating of iron with tin (221). In 1820 Samuel Parkes described several processes for this art which, he said, flourished in Bohemia long before it was practiced elsewhere in Europe. About the beginning of the seventeenth century, said he, mines of tin were discovered in Saxony, and the Elector had the address to transplant the tin-plate manufactory to his own kingdom. In the year 1665, when Mr. Andrew Yarrington visited these manufactories, they were of such extent as to employ about 80,000 workmen and the tin-plates were sent to all parts of the civilized world.. . . The art of making tin-plate does not seem to have been... [Pg.46]

Samuel Parkes (Stourbridge, 26 May 1761-London, 23 December 1825), owner of a circulating library at Stourbridge, soapmaker at Stoke-on-Trent (1793-1803), then technical chemist in London, published a popular catechism and some essays which contain much interesting historical information. He published a list of periodicals printed in Great Britain and Ireland from 1681 to 1749. His essay on the manufacture pf tin-plate is especially interesting. [Pg.362]

This is probably a very early synthetic barium sulfate q.v.). Samuel Parkes (1816) states that many years ago a Mr Hume had discovered a method of making a colour from baryte q.v.) which was sold imder the name Hiune s permanent white . Harley (1982) seemingly supports this with her statement that the pigment was proposed by a Mr. Hiune of Long Acre (London, UK). [Pg.187]
