Paperwork reduction

It becomes evident from the above that even a small laboratory will have a fair amount of time-consuming paperwork to take care of. More than one researcher has complained about the fact that record keeping interfered with creative work. Fortunately, there are ways to simplify the process. 

Analj ical laboratories may have the greatest amount of paperwork. Samples come in, are recorded and analyzed, and reports must go out. Copies must be kept of all reports. Billing information or reports on time charges for in-house work must be generated. 

The only problem with this system was in cases where partial deliveries were made. For such situations, special paperwork had to be generated, but it was rarely necessary.

The Paperwork Reduction Act requires each agency, including the EPA, to obtain approval from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) before collecting information from ten or more members of the pubHc. The OMB issues a confirmation, referred to as an OMB control number, for each approval it grants. The EPA cannot penaHze any person for faffing to respond to a request for information unless the EPA s request for information (i) has a vahd OMB control number and (ii) states that no response is required unless there is a valid OMB control number. OMB approvals are valid for only three years.
