Two other types of C4 pathways are recognized. In type-2 plants, Atriplex spongiosa) and type-3 Panicum maximum) plants, malate is replaced by aspartate as the major C4 acid transported to the bundle sheath cells. After transport, aspartate is converted to OAA by transamination. In type-2 plants, OAA is reduced to malate, which in turn is decarboxylated by NAD-malic enzyme in the bundle sheath cell mitochondria to give NADH, CO2 and pyruvate. In type-3 plants, OAA is decarboxylated in the cytosol by PEP carboxykinase in the presence of ATP, yielding PEP, CO2 and ADP. The return of carbon to the mesophyll cells for regeneration of the CO2 acceptor occurs as pyruvate (or alanine to maintain nitrogen balance) in type-2 and as PEP (or again perhaps as alanine) in type-3. These variations in the C4 pathway are summarized in Table I (see also Ref. 14). 

Perhaps one of the earliest and most influential studies that compared the agricultural impact of manual (slash-and-burn) and mechanical (bulldozer) clearing for pasture establishment in the Amazon basin was that of Seubert et al. (1977) in Peru. In that study, pasture (Panicum maximum) biomass produaion, over a 2-year period, was 68 % higher in the area cleared manually. Other studies have followed, with the general conclusion that pastures manually cleared from forest were more productive and that mechanical clearing adversely affected soil physical and chemical properties (e.g., Alegre 1985, Toledo and Morales 1979, Dias and Northcliff 1985).

Of 23 military personnel tested to only one species of grass, two were positive on prick testing, and both were relevant. Three had positive patch tests, none of which were relevant [427]. However, four military personnel reported by the same group in 1997 had reactions to nonpolar fractions of Axonopus compressusy one to the volatile fraction, one to the nonpolar fraction of Imperata cylindrica as well as the polar and nonpolar fractions of Panicum maximum and Pennisetum purpureumy and one to all firactions of Ischaemum muticum [428].
