Paladin

Don Paladin served in the Vietnam War in the Army Security Agency. When his military duty ended he returned to college with a desire to teach special education. Upon completion of his master s degree he moved into a new mobile home and began the teaching career of his dreams. Five years later he consulted a physician due to severe fatigue. My philosophy has always been that you learn from what you don t understand. Evolution comes from the darkness, not the light. So this has been a learning experience for me. The cup is half full for me. Always has been. Although I do have days when it s half empty. 

One of the hardest things for me now is not having a job. I always enjoyed what I did and had that to look forward to. I ve had chemical sensitivities for fifteen years now. I taught with it for twelve years. Toward the end I worked part-time. I had twenty years vested in the system, so I hung on. 

To hold onto my job, I had no social life. I came home, made dinner, did whatever work I had to do, then slept and went to work. That was my whole life. I couldn t be around most people, I was so sensitive to fragrances and other chemicals. It got worse and worse. Basically, I became an isolate. I was weak and fatigued and gave everything I had to surviving at work. I lost connections with friends and family and life in general. But I did the best I could with what I had. 

As long as I could control the environment in my classroom, I could manage. I was doing all kinds of things to maintain—shiatsu, acupuncture, diet. I did all the latest. But the thing I didn t have control over was the application of pesticides in the building. Finally, I couldn t handle it when they were using pesticides in the classroom. I reacted too severely. It just made me useless.

Industry stakeholders—including some physicians and researchers—and others with conflicts of interest have slowed both the research and the recognition of MCS. System 1 is based on MC8 (0.065 M) but needs the addition of TBP (1.5 M) in the organic phase and the introduction of oxalic acid in the liquid waste to prevent the extraction of zirconium by TBP. It has been pointed out that the addition of oxalic acid is necessary for the PALADIN process, previously implemented for the extraction of minor actinides. The addition of TBP which extracts several cations, leads to a lesser selectivity of the solvent. 

The solvent comprised of 0.5 M DMDOHEMA and 0.3 M HDEHP in total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) diluent was used for separation of Am and Cm from lanthanides and fission products. A proposed technological flowsheet (PALADIN process) was tested in 2000.56 The flowsheet of this process is given in Figure 6.2.
