In CEC, the EOF depends on the column packing structure and pore size of the packing material [51,111-116]. Simulations of an industrial scale column with structured packing have been reported by Taylor et al. (1992). They modeled a packed C4 splitter that had an internal diameter of about 2.5 m and five beds of structured packing with a total height of approximately 37 m as shown in Figure 14.33. The feed, which contains predominantly isobutane and n-butane... 

As in distillation columns, a packed column contains small packing elements dumped into the column in a random fashion, and these elements can provide the needed intimate contacting of the descending liquid and the rising gas or vapor. Packings of an ordered, or structured, form are rarely if ever used for absorption or stripping. 

Very high isobutene conversion, in excess of 99%, can be achieved through a debutanizer column with structured packings containing additional catalyst. This reactive distillation technique is particularly suited when the raffinate-stream from the MTBE unit will be used to produce a high-purity butene-1 product.
