P Selinene

Martin et al. (1974) collected specimens from 22 locations throughout the range of H. courbaril and identified a number of sesquiterpenes including caryophyllene [173], humulene [174], selinene isomers [175 is P-selinene], and other related compounds (see Eig. 2.48 for compounds 173-175). Caryophyllene and two selinene... [Pg.76]

The extrapolation of the vinylcyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement to a vinyl-cyclobutaiie-cyclohexene synthesis begins to create new insights into the synthesis of six membered ring natural products. The eudesmane sesquiterpene (—)-P-selinene, 217 illustrates such a strategy as summarized in Scheme 14 80). A suitable cyclohexene... [Pg.80]

Among the leafy spices, 45 aroma volatiles of desert parsley have been identified, with the major constituents as myristicin, apiole, /3-phellandrene, p-mentha-1,3,8-triene and 4-isopropenyl-l-methylbenzene (MacLeod eta/., 1985). Among these, apiole in particular has a desirable parsley odour character. The leaf stems of celery show three main constituents of volatiles, e.g. apiole (about 23%), 3-butylphthalide (about 22%) and sedanolide (about 24%). The last two possess a strong characteristic celery aroma (MacLeod et al., 1988). Limonene (40.5%), P-selinene (16.3%), cis-ocimene (12.5%) and P-caryophyllene (10.5%) are some of the volatile oil constituents present in celery leaves from Nigeria (Ehiabhi et al., 2003). [Pg.8]

Previous studies (Z) showed evidence for the presence of at least 20 sesquKerpene hydrocarbons in pineapple. These researchers identified 7 sesquiterpenes (1 tentative). We confirmed the presence of 3 of the sesquiterpenes and identified p-copaene, y-muurolene, a- and p-selinene in addition. Mass spectral data indicated the presence of other sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes which we have been unable to characterize at present. [Pg.236]

The silver nitrate-impregnated silica gel (25%) was applied to the separation of some sesquiterpenes. It was found that a mixture of p-selinene and caryophyllene could be separated satisfactorily by development with n-hexane and benzene-acetone (95 5, v/v) as mobile phases. After the development, the plates are dried in air and then sprayed with a solution of chlorosulfonic acid in acetic acid (1 2) and heated at 130°C. Usually, different... [Pg.154]

Some common terpenes include geraniol, found in geraniums limonene, oil of orange a-pinene, or oil of turpentine a-farnesene, oil of cintronella zingiberene, oil of ginger farnesol, found in lily of the valley P-selinene, oil of celery and caryophyllene, oil of cloves. Isoprene is also produced in animal bodies and is said to be the most common hydrocarbon present in the human body. By one estimate, a 70-kilogram (150-pound) person produces about 17 milligrams of... [Pg.381]

Well-known eudesmane derivatives in flavors and fragrances include a- and p-selinene from the oils of Cannabis saliva var. indica (Moraceae), celery (Apium graeveolens, Umbelliferae) and hops (Humulus lupulus, Moraceae), (+)-a- and (+)-P-eudesmol from some oils of eucalyptus (Eucalyplus macarlhuri), (-)-epi-y-eudesmol with its woody odor from the north African oil of geranium (Pelargonium odoralissimum and allied species), and the almost odorless diastereomeric (+)-y-eudesmol from various ethereal oils (+)-p-Costus acid and (+)-p-costol belong to the constituents of the essential oil obtained from the roots of Saussurea... [Pg.29]
