P-Chlorobenzenesulfonic acid

A solution of free base of the last compound and p-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid (molar ratio 1 1) were reacted together in boiling acetone. After 30 min the solution was cooled and ethyl acetate added to precipitate a colourless solid of N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-phenoxyethyl)-N-(2-thenyl)ammonium 4-chlorbenzolsulfonate. 

The chlorine is an ortho/para director and the sulfonic acid group is a meta director. Since the desired product is p-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid, the chlorine should be introduced first so it can direct the sulfonic acid group para. 

Regardless of the modifications being made, ERA Method 314.0 can be subject to interferences and loss of sensitivity caused by the presence of high concentrations of common matrix anions such as chloride, sulfate, and bicarbonate. In addition, p-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid, which can be found in leachates from some hazardous waste sites, is known to have exactly the same retention time as perchlorate on lonPac AS16 and can, therefore, lead to false positives. 

A new method of catalyzed aromatization was identified for the CHD-diacetate polymers and copolymers in the presence of strong acids. As seen in Figure 2 the addition of 3.7 mole % p-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid reduces the temperature of thermal aromatization by greater than lOO C.
