It is clear that human action can affect seven of eight of the major gi eenhouse forcings carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, CFCs, aerosols, and water vapor. As studies of solar variation have shown, it is also clear that human action is not the only factor involved in determining the impact of these forcings. It is the use of LIDAR devices as tools for spectroscopic measurements on the various gases present in the atmosphere which concerns us here. These include ozone, carbon dioxide, the CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons, such as CFC-11, trichlorofluoromethane, and CFC-12, dichlorodifluoromethane, used as refrigerants) and all those molecules regarded as atmospheric pollutants. [Pg.379]

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Prior to 1978 most aerosol products contained chlorofluorocarbon propeUants. Since that time, the use of chlorinated fluorocarbons for aerosols has been seriously curtailed. These compounds have been impHcated in the depeletion of the ozone (qv) layer and are considered to be greenhouse gases (see Airpollution Atmospheric modeling). [Pg.346]

In this sequence the Cl also acts as a catalyst and two molecules are destroyed. It is estimated that before the Cl is finally removed from the atmosphere in 1—2 yr by precipitation, each Cl atom will have destroyed approximately 100,000 molecules (60). The estimated O -depletion potential of some common CFCs, hydrofluorocarbons, HFCs, and hydrochlorofluorocarbons, HCFCs, are presented in Table 10. The O -depletion potential is defined as the ratio of the emission rate of a compound required to produce a steady-state depletion of 1% to the amount of CFC-11 required to produce the 1% depletion. The halons, bromochlorofluorocarbons or bromofluorocarbons that are widely used in fire extinguishers, are also ozone-depleting compounds. Although halon emissions, and thus the atmospheric concentrations, are much lower than the most common CFCs, halons are of concern because they are from three to ten times more destmctive to O, than the CFCs. [Pg.380]

In the last decade, the refrigerant issue is extensively discussed due to the accepted hypothesis that the chlorine and bromine atoms from halocarbons released to the environment were using up ozone in the stratosphere, depleting it specially above the polar regions. Montreal Protocol and later agreements ban use of certain CFCs and halon compounds. It seems that all CFCs and most of the HCFCs will be out of produc tion by the time this text will be pubhshed. [Pg.1124]

Ozone Layer was signed, which set a timetable for phasing out the production and use of CFCs, including halons. The other global environmental problem, stratospheric ozone depletion, was less controversial and more imminent. The U.S. Senate Committee Report supporting the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 states, Destruction of the ozone layer is caused primarily by the release into the atmosphere of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and similar manufactured substances—persistent chemicals that rise into the stratosphere where they catalyze the destruction of stratospheric ozone. A decrease in stratospheric ozone will allow more ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach Earth, resulting in increased rates of disease in humans, including increased incidence of skin cancer, cataracts, and, potentially, suppression of the immune system. Increased UV radiation has also been shown to damage crops and marine resources."... [Pg.16]

The new law buUds on the market-based structure and requirements currently contained in EPA s regulations to phase out the production of substances that deplete the ozone layer. The law requires a complete phase-out of CFCs and halons with interim reductions and some related changes to the existing Montreal Protocol, revised in June 1990. [Pg.404]

As you know, most countries are phasing out certain refrigerants to lessen damage to the ozone layer. The chemicals being phased out are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). Replacements are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and certain blends. Another area of potential interest is in refrigerator liners. The move away from the ozone-layer-damaging chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to HCFCs in the USA and pentane/cyclopentane blends in Europe has not been without problems. The use of CFCs such as fluorotrichloromethane became quite widespread, particularly as for many years the material was believed to cause few toxic and environmental problems. However, evidence that such materials were damaging the ozone layer became substantial and the use of such materials is to be discouraged and is illegal in many countries. To some extent CFCs have been substituted by methylene chloride (also illegal in some countries) and other fluoro compounds, but these too may prove to be environmentally unacceptable. For this reason there has been increased dependence on the use of the isocyanate-water reaction to generate sufficient carbon dioxide to give products of the required density. [Pg.797]

There now exist alternatives or sufficient quantities of controlled substances for almost all applications of ozone-depleting solvents. Exceptions have been noted for certain laboratory and analytical uses and for manufacture of space shuttle rocket motors. HCFCs have not been adopted on a large scale as alternatives to CFC solvents. In the near term, however, they may be needed as the conventional substances in some limited and unique applications. HCFC-141b is not a good replacement for methyl chloroform (1,1,1 -trichloroethane) because its ODP is three times higher. Alternatives for specific uses of ozone-depleting solvents are briefly described below. [Pg.37]
