The CeO CejOs System The redox properties ofceria and ceria-based materials have been studied in great detail because of their oxygen storage and release capacities, which are highly relevant for their application in modem three-way automotive catalysts [6, 7]. Unfortunately, the temperatures used in these studies are usually far lower than those necessary for thermal reduction in inert atmospheres. Therefore, the applicability of these data must be regarded as limited. Some case studies of ceria-based systems in solarthermal cycles are published in the literature [2,4,14] ... [Pg.410]

Stability can be achieved by the introduction of Ce in a Pt/Pd catalyst (Pt/Pd-Ce-Al Oj). The experiment indicated that catalytic elements fabricated with cerium-modified alumina have stronger oxygen storage and release ability than other conventional catalytic elements. In addition, it has been shown that, by doping cerium with pure alumina, the vacancies in alumina are easy to fill by Ce ions and the reversible oxidation reaction Cefi +V20 - 2CeO occurs. The spinel structure possesses a strong ability to restrain the calcination. [Pg.291]

For a complete understanding of the oxygen storage and release features of model and practical TWCs containing ceria-based materials, a detailed kinetic model based on elementary reaction steps, which describe the dynamics of all chemical and diffusion (surface/ bulk) processes, is imperative. Attempts at a kinetic model were reported for the CO oxidation reaction after applying the pulse ... [Pg.157]

The important question as to whether the chemical steps involved in the transient oxygen storage and release processes previously described (Sections 3.3.1 and 3.3.2) should be considered as equilibrium controlled processes (reversible elementary steps) has recently been addressed. It was found that reduction of ceria by CO or Hg to form COg or HgO, respectively, is very important, and if not included in proposed reaction schemes, a number of effects experimentally observed under the dynamic conditions of OSC measurement cannot be understood. For example (i) the observed OSC is lower in the presence of HgO and COg in the CO/He and Og/He alternate pulse or step-change gas compositions (ii) the observed OSC depends on the CO/Hg concentration (iii) when the catalyst is exposed to a rich-lean step, the outlet gas composition remains rich for some time after the inlet has switched to lean (iv) when a previously oxidized catalyst is subjected to a short rich pulse followed by stoichiometric operation, the catalyst emits a delayed pulse of CO/ Hg during the stoichiometric phase (v) when a catalyst is operated with an oscillating air/fuel ratio at slightly rich conditions, the... [Pg.168]
