YSZ is the usual material for use in solid oxide fuel cells. Another interesting application of stabilized zirconia is in the detection of oxygen, where it is used in both oxygen meters and ojg gen sensors, which are based on a specialized electrochemical cell (Section 5.4.4). 

A high quality of oxygen and water removal is more easily maintained. Attainment of 10 4 torr vacuum may require several hours for large cells, but it is a simple matter to maintain routinely less than a 1 ppm level of oxygen (we have successfully maintained less than 0.1 ppm oxygen as determined with a Chemtrix model 30 oxygen meter) in the inert atmosphere of the dry box. 

Lower the intake of the pump and a dissolved oxygen meter probe into the well slightly above or in the middle of the screened interval. Purge the well at a rate 300-500 milliliter/minute (ml/min). Check the water level periodically to monitor the drawdown, which should not exceed 4-8 in. If the pumping rate is unknown, measure the evacuated volume in a graduated container and monitor the time to establish the rate.

In 1940, Pauling developed this oxygen meter that would allow submarines to accurately measure oxygen levels. 

A Pressure Indicator (PI105) is strongly recommended. This pressure indicator is used to indicate the oxygen metering pressure for the flow element. Many types of flow elements require a precise metering pressure for accurate flow measurement.
